On Saturday, August 16, 19 adults and 10 children responded to Principal Susan Holiday’s invitation to help beautify Spellman in time for the start of the new school year. We removed bags and bags of weeds and trash, planted Black-Eyed Susans (donated by CAPS), put down mulch (donated by the Town) and generally helped make the front of the school look fabulous. The volunteers included Principal Holiday and her family; a Spellman staff member; parents of Spellman students; a teenage Spellman alumnus; and, Cheverly residents without kids, with older kids and with pre-school aged kids. State Delegate Jolene Ivey even joined us, rolling up her sleeves and getting right to work. It is just this kind of all-Cheverly involvement that CAPS wants to facilitate to support our local public schools. Many thanks to everyone who came out to help. Special thanks to Ann Barsi for remembering to bring a camera! Click on the picture below to see the whole day!!

On The 23rd of April CAPS hosted a Cheverly Town meeting on the topic of education. Below is a summary of that meeting.

The new model of JP Hoyer was announced and discussed. In essence that plan is that for the 2008-2009 school year the school will be adding 3 more Montessori classrooms. 2 classrooms that will serve 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. 1 classroom will be added to the current 1 to serve 3-5 year olds. In all bringing the school up to 4 Montessori classrooms. for the 2008-2009 school year 4 year old students can enroll directly to the school. All other levels and ages will be filled from the wait list from Robert Goddard. It has been highly suggested that if you have a student at one of these other levels to call the Principal @ Hoyer. For the 2009-2010 school year they will be adding 2 classrooms to serve students in grades 4-6. At this point the school will also have been assigned boundaries and entered into the same lottery system that serves other specialty programs in the county.

Assistant Superintendent Bridgewaters then announced and discussed the decision to bring in new leadership at Spellman. This conversation was long but in essence she outlined the process for hiring a Principal. Step one is HR screening the applicants, step 2 is interviews with a committee of Teachers and Parents, Then the candidates who pass that round go to the “chiefs” in Upper Marlboro, then the passing candidates from that round go to the Superintendent for final decision making. She also seemed to focus on the fact that they were looking for a leader that welcomed and would foster parent and community participation.

There was a brief conversation at the end regarding Weekday Nursery. Lots of praise for the program, and some ideas, and hopefully it go the subject on peoples minds. They are looking for ideas on how to grow the program.
